Chromium(III) chloride  is an inorganic, violet-to-green crystalline solid used widely as a precursor to other chromium compounds, in electroplating, as a Lewis acid catalyst in organic synthesis, and in nutritional supplements. It is commonly manufactured by chlorinating chromium oxide in the presence of carbon or directly from chromium metal.
